Custom Gamertag Logos

I love it when I find new ways to blend machine learning with graphic design. A few days ago, a client found me on Google and asked if I could design gamertag logos for him and his team. When he told me he wanted gamertag logos with backgrounds for a mousepad, I thought… now this is a project I HAVE to do.

Now, I’ve wanted to create gamertag logos for years, but I’ve never been great at drawing mascots from scratch. So, I spent two (or three) days training my AI model on what makes a good gamertag logo. Hundreds of images later, tweaks here, adjustments there… and boom, I cracked it.

After showing a few friends, I suddenly found myself in full production mode. I’ve been making these non-stop. In fact, I’m still busy making them as I’m writing this.

How I Make Gamertag Logos (and Why Clients Get More Than Just One)

When I take on a gamertag logo project, I don’t just create a single option, I generate a TON of them. I usually render about 100 versions, then narrow it down to my top 10 picks. From there, the client chooses their favourite, which I then refine in Photoshop. This way, it’s perfect for mousepads, mugs, t-shirts, or whatever they want to put it on.

Taking It a Step Further: Gamertags Based on Real People

I thought it would be special to bring the person INTO the design. If a client provides about 30 images of themselves, I can train a model to include their likeness in the gamertag mascot. So instead of a generic warrior, reaper, or rogue, it actually looks like them, but in badass, stylized form.

The only downside is, is that it takes a couple of hours to train those images, so it costs more for the client, but honestly, the results are completely worth it.
