A Christmas Gift That Writes Its Own Neverending Story

For a special Christmas gift, I decided to recreate a beloved book from “The Neverending Story” for my girlfriend, Christi, a die-hard fan of the film. It involved printing and binding the iconic book complete with a leather cover and 3D-printed embellishments to match the movie’s magic.

I also made a replica of Atreyu’s necklace using 3D printing to complete the ensemble. The joy on Christi’s face, when she unwrapped her gift, was the real reward, reflecting the love and effort put into this unique present.

The first step involved printing and binding the pages of the book. This image captures the neatly stacked pages, freshly bonded, ready for their transformation into the iconic prop from the movie.

I then moved on to 3D printing the decorative elements that make the book cover unique—two serpents locked in eternal combat and ornate corner frames. These pieces, shown fresh off the printer in black resin, were essential for bringing the awesome design to life.

Next, each 3D printed piece was primed to ensure the final paint would adhere well and look seamless.

After priming, I applied a gold spray paint, giving the pieces a regal and ancient look, mimicking the magical aura of the book as seen in the film. The large Necklace I had to spray and paint by hand.

I then had to find the right leather for the parts to be glued onto.

The final reveal showcases the completed book with a vinyl cutout for title. The book now looks as though it leapt straight out of the movie.
