What Concert Tickets Used to Mean & the Shows We Never Got

Categories: Art | Custom | Design | Featured

There was a time when a concert ticket was more than just a barcode. It was a keepsake, a story you could hold. The design carried the memory of a night that mattered.

I made this after going through a box of old ticket stubs and realised how personal they felt compared to today’s disposable white fading tickets. I still have some of the best moments of my life, from meeting David Copperfield at his Illusion show to going to music concerts with friends and family. Those tickets don’t just remind me of the event, they remind me of the people who were there.

Many bands never came to South Africa, and even now, a “world tour” often doesn’t include us. So I made these designs that imagine an alternate timeline, one where the greats did perform in South Africa.

Each of these ticket stub designs is my interpretation of what “could have been”. Tickets that you actually would have wanted to keep if you were there. Most of these are “real tours”, but as though they came to South Africa and where they would have performed.

I wish concerts today didn’t go paperless in a digital age, because some experiences deserve more than a QR code or a flimsy printout that fades in a month, they deserve a ticket worth keeping.
